First Impressions and Product Details

Upon receiving the Ion Charcoal Flash Powder Lightener from Sally Beauty, I was immediately struck by its unique packaging. It came in small individual packets, a departure from the usual larger containers. The packaging clearly stated that it’s a 10-level lightener, promising significant lift in a single application. A key feature advertised was the inclusion of Plex 3 bonding technology, a definite plus for protecting hair health during the bleaching process.

The instructions indicated that the lightener can be mixed with 10, 20, 30, or 40 volume developer, with a recommended ratio of 1:1.5 (one part lightener to one and a half parts developer). The maximum processing time is 45 minutes, shorter than many other lighteners on the market. Interestingly, the instructions also specified that it should not be applied to freshly washed hair.

Application and Processing

My hair was already slightly oily, which worked in my favor since the instructions advised against freshly washed hair. I had about 5 weeks of regrowth, less than my usual 6-8 week interval. I mixed the lightener with 20 volume developer at a 1:1.5 ratio. The mixture was noticeably thick, almost clay-like in consistency and had a very mild, almost imperceptible scent.

I deviated from my usual application method. Instead of starting from the bottom and working my way up, I started at the roots and worked downwards, aiming to avoid overlapping in future touch-ups. During application, I noticed it swelled noticeably more than other lighteners I've used. I monitored the lightening process, checking every 10 minutes, keeping in mind the 45-minute maximum processing time.

Results and Final Thoughts

Unfortunately, this lightener was a significant disappointment. The clay-like consistency resulted in a dry, flaky application that was difficult to work with. The charcoal base made it impossible to see how effectively the lightener was lifting the color, a frustrating aspect of the process. Even after rinsing, my hair felt extremely dry and brittle.

I’ve tried charcoal-based lighteners before, and my experience with this one aligns with my previous disappointments. I find the consistency too thick and difficult to manage, hindering visibility of the lightening process. The drying effect was also more pronounced than with other lighteners. In short, I would not recommend this product; there are better options available at Sally Beauty.

Comparison and Recommendations

Compared to other lighteners like Sally's Bond Bar lightener, the Ion Charcoal Flash Powder significantly underperformed. The Bond Bar lightener, for example, swelled less and provided a smoother, more manageable application. This Ion product left my hair feeling exceptionally dry and its thick consistency made it difficult to achieve even saturation. The inability to monitor the lightening process effectively was another serious drawback.

While the lack of strong fragrance was a positive, it's simply not enough to outweigh the negative aspects. For effective, less damaging hair lightening, I would strongly recommend Sally Beauty's Bond Bar lightener as a superior alternative. It provides excellent results without the dryness and difficulty of application associated with the Ion Charcoal Flash Powder.
